NIH Library Writing Center: Welcome
About the Writing Center
We support the manuscript preparation and publication efforts of NIH researchers and scientists through a collection of online and in-library resources, tools, editorial consulting, and training opportunities.
The NIH Library Writing Center can help you:
- Request personal assistance with the writing process. (This service is available for NIH and HHS affiliate staff only, and provides light and medium editing of NIH work-related manuscripts for publication or documents for presentation. Please wait to send your document until instructed.)
- Find answers to your vexing grammar and punctuation questions
- Review examples of abstracts, journal articles, posters, protocols, and resumes
- Learn writing tips and techniques
- Identify a journal's impact factor
- Organize and format your citations
- Check for instances of plagiarism, including self-plagiarism
NIH and HHS affiliate badge holders are eligible to receive free personal editing assistance when preparing documents such as a manuscript, a protocol, a case study, or a slide show by requesting an appointment. We can suggest resources and provide editing service to help you get your draft ready for peer-review. Editorial service turn-around time is negotiated with the editor; delivery times vary based on the complexity of the manuscript.
Locked and unlocked study carrels are available for NIH staff. Locked study carrels are located on the lower level of the Library and include a desk, shelf and bulletin board, high-speed Internet connection, wireless capability, cell phone access, and a locking door. To reserve a locked study carrel, contact the Information Services desk, in-person, via email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or via phone at 301-496-1080. A laptop is available at the Information Desk for use by NIH staff. The laptop can be used throughout the Library. A laptop loan agreement is required when borrowing the laptop for the first time.
Writing Center Collection
The books in the Writing Center are not available for check out; however, the Library provides duplicate copies of some of the books in the circulating collection.
A self-service color copier is available for free to NIH staff, other federal government employees, and Clinical Center patients and their families. This machine is for copying library materials only. It is located across from the Information Desk in the Reading Room. To log into the machine, please ask for assistance at the Information Desk. We encourage customers to use the green option on the machine. It scans information into PDFs that can be sent via email or stored on a USB key.
Photocopying services are not available for the general public. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has facilities available for public use.
